This regulation establishes fire and life safety requirements for means of egress in psychiatric facilities, covering travel distances to exits, exit discharge surfaces, illumination of egress paths, emergency lighting duration, and life safety branch electrical requirements for buildings with life support systems. Facility operators must ensure exit travel distances comply with NFPA Life Safety Code limits (150/200 feet), maintain hard-packed all-weather exit discharge surfaces free of obstructions, provide continuously operational or automatic egress illumination, and supply at least 1.5 hours of emergency lighting. These are CMS survey requirements applied via Form CMS-2786R under the 2012 Life Safety Code.
