This regulation addresses fire and life safety construction requirements for non-health care occupancies that are physically adjacent to a Health Care Occupancy. It requires at least a two-hour fire resistance-rated separation between the occupancies and restricts simultaneous inpatient services to fewer than four patients. Outpatient surgical departments must always be classified as Ambulatory Health Care Occupancy regardless of patient volume. Facility operators must ensure proper construction separation and correct occupancy classification to remain compliant with the 2012 Life Safety Code.
