This section establishes the legal procedures under which individuals may be involuntarily committed to the custody of a local mental health authority in Utah. Adults may only be committed through emergency temporary commitment (with or without examiner certification) or by court order, while persons under 18 are governed by a separate statutory part. Facility operators must ensure that any involuntary admission follows one of these prescribed legal pathways.
