Narcotic treatment programs in Pennsylvania must obtain informed, voluntary, written consent from patients before administering methadone or LAAM for maintenance or detoxification treatment. The consent form must disclose that these drugs are addictive narcotics requiring medical supervision, that adverse effects are possible, that alternative treatments exist, that risks and complications have been explained, and that methadone crosses the placental barrier and causes fetal physical dependence.
